Happy new year!
Happy new year!
The night started for me at 10pm or so, catching the tram down to St. Kilda. Swanston Street was blocked off, and very festive.
There was a latin band, some DJs here and there, hula-hoop guy and other buskers, and a whole lot of watchful police (which is probably a Good Thing, considering the number of people).
Consequently, the tram stopped at Lonsdale St., so I walked down Swanston, over the bridge and found a tram to St. Kilda.
The tram ride was particularly entertaining, with hearty renditions of Waltzing Matilda, Give Me A Home Among The Gumtrees, Fight For Your Right To Party, We Will Rock You, Hey Mickey, and other such classics. The ‘Aussie aussie aussie; Oi Oi Oi‘ chant was another popular one. Think drunk sardines in a shaking tin and you get the picture.
Once in St. Kilda, I met up with Stan and his lot, and we equipped ourselves with drinks. We met up with Mirsad and Peter shortly afterwards.
St. Kilda beach had a fantastic energy, and was packed with people – The party crowd, not the family crowd, like in the city. Lots of young, beautiful people!
There was an impromptu sound system with a DJ playing some quite decent dance music, so I headed into the frey for a while. The new year was welcomed with a multitude of red flares and (unofficial) fireworks on the beach, and random happy-new-year hugs with cute strangers.
The crowd petered out a short time after 12, and we wandered along the beach to see what else was happening (not heaps, actually – there was a private party, but not much else). So, back to the makeshift beach party, where Dennis and I stayed, while the others went in search of food/air conditioning.
There was dancing (albeit, only around 6 of us), and.. Well, dancing. Lots of people were sitting around in couples, or standing around taking in the atmosphere (or just standing around). There was a disturbance on the city side of the beach, and we were moved down the beach by police – The word going around was that someone had had their throat cut, although rumour is rarely reliable. Regardless, we decided to move on.
We finished off the night with a trip to the city, in search of a pub. We ended up at Crown, where nothing much was happening – everything was closed down for the night; after grabbing a drink, we decided 4:30am was tribute enough to the new year, and called it a night.
Then Peter and Mirsad found that their transport was locked into the car park until 6, so the three of us stayed around to watch the first sunrise of 2006.
It’s gonna be a good year!
I think for next year, a bigger party on St Kilda beach would be great, with a bigger sound system and more people. It would have to be free as well, to avoid having to cordon the place off – Keeping it open would be much better. Nothing beats a beach party.
