Mm… Chocolate

October 4th, 2005

Kat and I went out for dinner and a movie last night, for my birthday – We went to the Saffron Cottage in Tecoma, the best Indian restaurant in Victoria.. Then we went to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

It was really good! Much better than I was expecting; Johnny Depp was wonderful, and really lifted the movie. He played a quirky insecure, often freaky Wonka, with this great little ‘heeeeeeh’ giggle. I continue to marvel at that guy’s versatility.

The characters were hilarious – Veruca Salt (standing outside the gates of the factory): "Daddy, I want to go in!"; Mr. Salt: "It’s 9:59, sweetheart"; Veruca: "Make time go faster!"

Tim Burton’s directing style fit the film perfectly, and was very true to the tone of Roald Dahl’s book; And it’s full of wonderful little details.. Wonka mockingly mouthes the placating words of the spoilt Veruca Salt’s father as he’s speaking them, "I’m sorry, darling, Mr. Wonka’s being unreasonable"…. the hair cream ("What do you do with hair cream!?" "Locks in moisture (giggle)"), and the whipped cream, "Whipped cream is not whipped cream at all, unless it’s been whipped with whips"…. The cute 2001 reference, the Oompa Loompa psychiatrist. Really very clever.

So, despite being a kids’ movie, it’s still very entertaining.. The humour is wonderful, the characters are hilariously extreme, the Oompa Loompas (or rather, Deep Roy, who played all of them) were brilliantly witty, and the four musical numbers coinciding with the downfall of each bratty child are great fun.

I think, anyway!
